Trials against Basque citizens in Madrid.
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson today welcomed the release of Iosu Uribetxeberria. Following a meeting with representatives of Herrira (the association for the rights of Basque prisoners) in Strasbourg Ms Anderson said:
With the confirmation on the part of the Spanish National Court for the parole for Josu Uribetxeberria:
1. In the first place, we consider it to be good news that Josu Uribetxeberria, a seriously ill prisoner, has been released. Good news for all of the people and agents who want to build a scenario without the violations of rights, since the release of Uribetxerria signifies the end of a cruel violation of rights.
2. However, we also wish to criticize the attitude of the government of the Popular Party. The decisions taken by the government and their diverse groups have led Uribetxerria to this extreme situation.
3. Just as we have denounced on several occasions, the government of the PP has insisted on the violation of rights, with the objective of conditioning and blocking the resolution process.
4. So, we call on the Popular Party to stop utilizing the penitentiary policy as an instrument against the resolution process, annulling all of the measures of exception, freeing all of the ill prisoners and repatriating all of the Basque political prisoners.
