Basque Political Prisoner Iosu Uribetxeberria has started a hunger strike

Iosu Uribetxerria suffers cancer, with two nodules lodged in his brain and lung. The political prisoner was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and even though, has been kept in prison since then. Spanish Penal Law allows the conditional release of prisoners suffering incurable diseases on its Article 92.

Last July he was transferred to hospital from the prison of Leon, after suffering dizziness and severe headaches. In the “Hospital de León” the nodules and metastasis were found out.

Few days ago he was transferred to the Donostia Hospital where he is constantly kept watch on by the Ertzaintza. The prisoner has explained that he begins a hunger strike to denounce the treatment he is suffering and request decent conditions, he has also denounced that the Government keeps in prison other 14 prisoners with serious illnesses.

The association for rights of political prisoners Herrira, had already begun a permanent piquet requesting the release of the prisoner.
