The collective of basque exiles makes their contribution to the process of solutions

A massive public act of collective political exiles this past week this past Saturday in Biarritz.

The collective of Basque political exiles presented their contribution to the resolution process of the conflict in an emotional act in which thousands of people showed their solidarity with members of this collective.

The act was very emotional and they also had present all of those who for one reason or another are not in the Basque Country. Some of them were present through videos sent from the countries that have taken them in, such as Cuba, Cabo Verde and Sao Tome. Also you could hear the message of the writer and also exile Joseba Sarrioandia, read by the berstolari Amets Arzallus or the story of the son of an exile who told the story of his experiences in first person. Together with that, different acts and music. With all of that, they went over the history and circumstances of this collective.

After that around one hundred members of this collective came to the stage. In the name of all of them two representatives of the collective read a document which contained the contribution of the collective. The document titled “Sorterritik sorterria, lepoan hartu eta segi aurrera” (from our homeland to our homeland, we go forward) covered the commitment of the collective to the process of solutions that the Basque Country suffers and set out a roadmap for the return home of all the political exiles as a consequence of the conflict.

The exiles made clear that the problem of exile will only be resolved when the reasons that caused them to leave are overcome. In the document that they presented, after reaffirming that the reasons for the conflict are political, they proposed taking steps in three aspects to advance towards a resolution.

Measures of exception

They demand the suspension of legal proceedings based on declarations made under torture, and consequently, the arrest orders, the Euro-orders and the extraditions that were caused by them.

Dignity

The path for overcoming the conflict and its resolution demand dignity and especially to face the most serious situations. For that they want to share with the Basque Country and all of the agents the steps that have to be taken to guarantee their basic rights and some dignified living conditions. Among the measures to be taken they named the following: make a list of ill exiles and find a way to solve their situation; take measures to guarantee the dignity of the exiles in a situation of exclusion and finally to help in returning home all of the exiles.

The account and truth

The new democratic society that we want to build among everyone demands that the truth be known about all that has happened, also about the attacks suffered by the exiles which has provoked disappearances, damage and death.

Before the act a representation of the collective also met with diverse social agents and political representatives to whom they explained the main lines covered in their document of their contribution.

In SORTU we consider it very positive this step taken by the refugees and we consider that they are an agent in the consequences of the conflict whose contributions must be taken into account. We see it as good, that with the immobility that other agents maintain, the exiles, one of the agents who are a part of the conflict, show their willingness to take steps towards the resolution.

Otegi proposes more initiatives to overcome the blockage

An interesting interview with Arnaldo Otegi about the current situation of the process and the possibilities of advancing in it.

In an interview given from the Logroño prison to the digital media “eolapaz” the pro-independence leader reflected on the resolution process for the Basque conflict and made interesting contributions to take it out of its current situation of blockage.

Otegi considers that SORTU, of which he is the Secretary General in spite of being in prison, must put on the table all of the political, social and trade union sectors committed to the process of solutions a wide range of initiatives that with a unilateral character overcome and neutralize the evident strategy of blockage, collapse and psychological warfare that the state has planted in the Basque Country. These measures will allow, according to Otegi, to return the protagonism to the Basque people, the only possible recipient and protagonist of this process of solutions and national and social liberation.

In another moment of the interview he expressed his conviction of the irreversibility of the resolution process. He also affirmed that the decision by ETA to abandon the armed struggle is definitive and irreversible and is based on the decision taken after a long reflection in the Abertzale Left to commit only and exclusively to peaceful and democratic ways to achieve our historical objectives.

Otegi concluded the interview expressing his most humane side, explaining how he takes advantage of the time in prison for reflection, study and formation.

IN BRIEF:

The Basque government presents their peace plan: Last week the Lehendakari of the Basque Autonomous Community presented a peace plan in which he proposes a series of “mini-agreements” among the four largest sensibilities. For EH Bildu this plan parts from a false premise because the reality of repression hasn’t changed. EH Bildu advocates for the plan of the Basque government to go to the causes of the conflict. EH Bildu finds positive elements in the plan, such as the willingness to recognise and repair the victims of torture and others that, in change, that are debatable, such as the point referring to penitentiary policy since the cabinet of Urkullo lacks competencies in this matter.

The latest detainees denounce pressure: The two detainees last week in Gipuzkoa by the Guardia Civil denounce having received threats and pressures during the first days of their arrest. The threats ceased after a meeting of Amaiur with the Mechanism Against Torture. The detainees were sent to prison in spite of having denied the accusations against them in their declaration before the judge and they did not make any declarations to the police.
